Masters Report - September 2013 Added September 23, 2013
Inverclyde Masters

The 19th running of the Inverclyde Masters meet took place over the past weekend in scenic Greenock, overlooking the Clyde and Helensburgh to the north. With an exceptionally strong entry of nearly 180 swimmers from all over Scotland and the North of England the stage was set for an exciting and full programme of events.

Seasoned competitors Claire Nixon, John McKay, Claire Murray, Stewart Halliday, Alastair Caird and Stewart Maxwell from Tay Masters made the journey to the West of Scotland. Steven Bonthrone, Michael Lawrie and Trudy Brown from Perth Masters also took part. It was very encouraging to see Ashleigh Jolly and Erin Torrie (Perth City) and Luke Shepherd (St Thomas) taking part in their first masters competition, in the “trainee masters” age group. Camilla Hattersley, with the Commonweath Games in her sights was also competing for City of Glasgow.

The full results are yet to published, however I understand Claire Nixon, John McKay, Claire Murray, Alastair Caird and Stewart Maxwell won their age groups overall with Claire Murray and Trudy Brown recording a number of personal bests. Tay Masters teams also brought three home first place trophies for mixed medley and mixed freestyle relays demonstrating the relaxed atmosphere of masters competitions by accepting generous assistance from Carol Thain and Lindsey Tough.

Midlands Masters and Pentathlon (Sat 5th October)

This new event on the calendar has been very positively received by masters swimmers throughout Scotland. The format is distinctive and, in the true spirit of masters swimming, includes an “all-comers” freestyle relay where teams of four will be allotted, regardless of gender and club so their aggregate team times will be (hopefully) the same. This should make for a friendly, exciting and close event.

The District has been successful in gaining financial support from Angus Ahead (a representative from Angus Council will be attending the prizegiving), The George Hotel in Montrose, Sharkeys (the presentation venue) and Madisons (Montrose Sports Centre coffee shop).
Despite this, entries are disappointingly low (approximately 50) but it is hoped the meet will run, setting a sound foundation to build upon in future years.

The official closing date is midnight 16th September, so any last minute encouragement from club coaches and officials in the district would be very welcome. Entries will be accepted by email.
The organisers would be very grateful for any assistance on the day from STOs, it is believed Neil Valentine has requested support through the usual channels.
