Open Water Report - September 2013 Added September 23, 2013
For this year only 2013 some of the championships were CLUB ONLY. The following swims remained open championships:

Harbour Relay Sunday 9th June
Midland Championships Loch Earn Saturday 6th July
Bridge to Bridge/Discovery Mile Saturday 17th August
Cranog Sunday 25th August
Midland Senior and Stannergate Sunday 1st September

The open water season has been very disappointed with numbers entering swims very low compared with previous years. We need to try to encourage more young people to try open water swimming.

Midland District Championship

The closing date for this swim was extended by one week to try to encourage a larger entry. After attracting a very competitive field four swimmers withdrew as they were selected for the national development squad meet. On the day we had two juniors and two seniors from other districts. The junior course was extended to the bridge. The results were:
Junior Boy – Patrick Smith 1:10:36 (New record)
Junior Girl – Emily Smiles DNF
Senior Gents – 1st Nathan Kennedy 1:49:06 2nd Ryan Kaczmarek 1:57:02

Woodhaven

A total of eight swimmers entered this event five from the Netherlands. This was a really exciting swim the finish was like a race with four swimmers competing for first place.  The results were:
Overall winner – Frank Van Der Wolff 0:57:26 (new record)
Senior Gents – 1st Frank Van der Wolff 0:57:26 2nd Rick Nobels 0:57:28 3rd Nico Mak 0:57:40 4th Thom Wever 0:59:01
Senior ladies – 1st ClaireMurray 1:05:10
Junior Girls – 1st Elena Peeters 1:04:24

Midland Senior and Junior Stannergate

This championship attracted a very disappointing entry with only two senior swimmers. Unfortunately due to adverse weather conditions to swim had to be cancelled. The water temperature was too low and there were very high winds. As it is late in the season the likely hood of getting a suitable date for another swim is slim and as the entry was very poor I have decided not to run this event this year.

Discovery Mile

Twenty swimmers took to the water for the inaugural Discovery Swim. This swim is designed to attract first timers to open water swimming and is an ideal spectator swim as supporters can follow the swim along Riverside to the finish.
Senior Men - Gary Hurr
Senior Ladies – Vicky Taylor
Junior Boy - Matthew Michie
Junior Girl – Eilidh Grant

Judge Level 1 Open Water

From the total of 8 trainees six have completed this level and will be licenced shortly. One candidate is nearly complete and one candidate has still to start. Planning swims for next season should be easier now there are more level one judge’s in place.

Training for Judge Level 2 Open Water

Stewart Downie and Sandra Westgate attended OWJ2 training seminar on Sunday 11 August at Loch Venachar. We now have three candidates training towards level two.

Open Water Report - February 2013 Added February 24, 2013
Report Open Water Meeting Saturday 26 January 2013

This was the longest meeting I have ever attended in both my professional or volunteering life. I left after six and a half hours and it was not finished. There were two items still on the agenda.

Open Water Qualification

At present there is no formal programme in place. Trying to set up a module within existing frame work. The module will be optional, CPD accredited and available for level 2/3 only with continuous assessment. In May will start a pilot course for level 2 and roll out for level 2/3 next year.

There are a number of private companies offering open water courses. These qualifications will not be recognised by SASA.

National squad/team

First event Germany 28 June - 1 July 2013 4 swimmers and 1 staff

Second event Development Camp mid July 12 swimmers and 3 staff

Third event Cyprus (tbc) 6 swimmers and 2 staff

All the above events fully funded.

Midland District Report

In my report I asked for assistance from qualified officials to help out at our events in 2013.  I have been issued with an up to date list of details.

I also asked if the national committee would be prepared to assist with travelling costs for officials as we hold many more events compared to any other district. This was turned down.

I asked if pool referees could be used at open water events.  Could they be fast tracked into open water? What additional training would be required?  I was informed that there is no fast track available candidates would have to start at level one and work there way up.

On a more positive note all swim dates for YEAABA have been confirmed as well as the two dates for the district. Midland Senior and Stannergate require only once licence as they are both on the same date, same river etc.

It was suggested that next year 2014 the swim dates could be discussed with the open water committee before publication as there could be problems with the District swim in July.
