Water Polo Report - September 2013 Added September 23, 2013
The new district committee would like to thank the district for approving our appointment, it was unfortunate to lose Steven Funai after such a short period of time in post and we would all like to wish him well for the future.

The committee are keen to put a 4 point action plan in place to move forward a number of items as follows:

  • Liaison with Dundee Education Active Schools and expansion to both Angus and Perth & Kinross to re-establish a Tayside School Championship.
  • Assist Swimming clubs who wish to develop or commence water polo
  • Re-establish district leagues (in years gone by Aberdeen and local universities were invited to play in these can this be looked at.
  • Bring one SNL or Scottish cup event to the District.

Water Polo Report - February 2013 Added February 24, 2013
Training update

Training for the New Year has started well at both Olympia and Menzieshill High Schools. The Monday night Olympia sessions since training restarted have averaged at around 40 for the session with many new juniors coming down to get involved in the sport. Many thanks to Steven Cuthbert, Steven Adams and Linda Fox for their assistance in running the Monday session.

The Tuesday night Junior session (6pm to 7pm) at Menzieshill High run by Linda also displays healthy numbers with at least 10 juniors attending each week. Thanks also to Louise Fox and Braden Henderson for assisting in this session. The senior training run by Steven Cuthbert and Steven Adams also attracts good numbers with at least 10 seniors attending the 7 to 9pm session.

 Scottish Junior League Update

The 97 team have finished the league joint top with Dunfermline and will now go forward to a play off to decide the league winner. The play off will take place on March 10th 2013 at the National Swimming Academy, Stirling at 12.30pm. Menzieshill were undefeated after the split scoring impressive victories over Warrender, Dunfermline, Portobello and Hamilton. Well done to team members Braden Henderson, Sam Muir, Ben Parsons, Hannah Edwards, Emma Coupar, Megan Little, Shonagh Howe, Kirsty Bell, Alice Parsons, Rachel Renton and Jack Robertson

The 95 team had a mixed season but also showed some positive results. They look as if they will finish 3rd in the league. Their last match was a narrow defeat to Hamilton (9-8) with between 4 to 6 key players unavailable due to personal reasons. This meant the 97 team were required to play two games back to back which had an effect on the overall result. Well done to Louise Fox, Jenna Culloch, Chris Culloch, Paul Yuile, Lesley Nicholson, Amy Bryant, Louise Bryant, Braden Henderson, Sam Muir, Ben Parsons, Hannah Edwards, Emma Coupar, Megan Little, Shonagh Howe, Kirsty Bell, Alice Parsons and Rachel Renton who all played their part over the seasons fixtures.

Senior Scottish men’s and Women’s update

No fixtures have been played recently with the exception of friendlies which assisted in tuning up both the Caledonia Men’s and Women’s teams for their quest for promotion in the BWPL.

The fixture list has just been announced for Phase 1 with Menzieshill’s Men’s matches all taking place at Stirling. The first match will be against Dunfermline on March 10th with the final fixture of Phase 1 being against Western on 19th May.

The Senior Women’s team begin their campaign against St Andrews at Olympia on March 11th and their final Phase 1 fixture is against Western on 19th May at Stirling.

All the best to both teams for the forthcoming league fixtures!

Caledonia Update

Steven Cuthbert, Allan Shepherd and Logan Shepherd were involved in the Caledonia team who gained promotion to the Men’s top division just before Christmas. Well done to those players involved and to the whole of the Caledonia team on gaining promotion. There will be a derby game against Portobello to look forward to next year.

This is the first time two Scottish teams are both in the top British division.

The Women’s team have also been promoted thanks to Sheffield A withdrawing their team from the top division. The team initially fell agonisingly short of promotion with a few key results not going their way. Menzieshill had Laura Mathieson, Louise Fox, Susan Johnstone, Caroline Connor and Sara Thomson involved in the squad. Good luck girls for the coming season in the top division!

Scottish Cup Draw

Menzieshill have entered Senior Men’s and Women’s as well as both 95 and 97 Junior Scottish Cup Competitions. Menzieshill Men were beaten in the final against Dunfermline 15 -9. The Women narrowly lost to Edinburgh Uni 8-7. The 95 team have qualified for the final and will play Dunfermline on Sunday whilst the 97 team play Portobello also this Sunday. Fixtures will take place throughout February and March with coaches targeting four finals and two cup triumphs.

British Cup

Steven Cuthbert, Logan Shepherd, and Allan Shepherd are away playing in British Cup for Caledonia in February with the qualifiers taking place on 2nd/3rd of Feb. Caledonia beat Portobello 11 – 10 but narrowly lost to Manchester so were unable to reach the finals stage.

Dundee Sports Awards 2012

Louise Fox has once again made the final 3 nominations for Dundee Young Sports Person of the Year. Louise won the same award last year. The whole club would like to wish Louise Fox the best of luck on award ceremony night. The presentations will take place at the Caird Hall on Wednesday 20th February 2013. Louise continues to thrive at club and national level and is training with GB U18’s.

Great Britain Update

Louise Fox continues to make waves in the Under 18 GB set up whilst it has just been announced that Hannah Edwards (Menzieshill) has been selected for the Great Britain U16 training squad. Congratulations to Hannah on this excellent achievement.

Officials and Table Judges

Through role as DOTO I plan to organise referee and table judging courses throughout this year. It would greatly help if Menzieshill and other clubs interested in water polo could provide more officials. There will be an official course set up for August/September for Midlands which I shall be organising. I shall put out an e-mail to all clubs interested in becoming Grade ‘D’ referees.

Sub-committee plans

After an initial meeting with Ian Meldrum it was decided to approach individuals about being part of a committee dedicated to enhancing water polo in the district. When the necessary people have been approached the Midlands committee shall be informed.

League and Tournament plans

Last year while working for Angus Council I delivered various taster sessions to clubs in Angus including: Forfar, JAWS, Kirriemuir and St Thomas. From the success of the Midlands developmental water polo tournament organised last June in Forfar I would like to propose organising a similar tournament. Clubs out with the district would be invited but none of the established clubs within the country would be invited as it was felt last time that some teams brought their best juniors which gave little chance to the new developing teams.

Montrose have apparently expressed an interest in water polo in their new pool and should this provide popular with other clubs also expressing an interest I would be keen to set a timeframe of establishing a Midlands district league for novices commencing in 2014.

Courses

Neal Rayner, Scottish water polo development officer has informed me that UKCC courses will be run at Montrose pool during March, April and May with exact dates to be confirmed. I would be keen for clubs who wish to introduce a water polo discipline to their club to attend these courses.

Council Mini Polo Programmes

Angus Council have begun to run mini polo classes in some of their council facilities including Brechin and Forfar. Some of these players have started to attend Menzieshill club sessions. Forfar Pool has water polo kit provided by Scottish Water polo and the new Montrose Pool also offers water polo facilities.

Any questions on any of the information given in the report do not hesitate to contact myself directly.
